A turbo back exhaust replaces the entire system from the turbo outlet to the tailpipe — dump pipe, mid-section, muffler and tip. It is the most complete exhaust upgrade available for a turbocharged vehicle, and the reason it outperforms a cat back is simple: it removes restriction at the source rather than halfway down the system.

Turbo Back vs Cat Back — What's the Difference?

A cat back exhaust starts behind the catalytic converter. A turbo back exhaust starts at the turbo, so it includes the dump pipe as well as everything a cat back covers. On a turbo diesel, that dump pipe section is where most of the factory restriction sits, which is why a turbo back system delivers noticeably better spool and throttle response than a cat back on the same vehicle.

Choosing the Right System for Your Build

Pipe size

3 inch suits most diesel 4x4 applications and is the size we build the majority of our systems in. 3.5 inch is worth considering on higher-output builds, though on a stock tune a larger pipe can cost you low-down response.

DPF-equipped vehicles

Fitment differs between DPF and non-DPF models, and on later vehicles the correct system depends on which the vehicle was built with. Check your build date before ordering, or call our team on 03 9793 9916 and we will confirm the right system for your vehicle.

Material

Aluminised steel keeps the cost down; 409 stainless lasts longer in Australian conditions. Coastal and heavy off-road use is where stainless pays for itself.

Will a turbo back exhaust add power?

Yes. By replacing the restrictive factory dump pipe and exhaust with mandrel-bent piping, a turbo back system lets the turbo breathe more freely, which improves spool and throttle response. Actual gains vary by vehicle, pipe size and whether the vehicle is tuned afterwards, so treat any single horsepower figure with caution.

Is a turbo back exhaust legal in Australia?

It depends on the configuration. Systems that retain the catalytic converter and stay within your state's noise limits are road legal. Systems that remove or bypass emissions equipment, including DPF delete systems, are not legal for road use in Australia and are supplied for off-road, competition and export applications only. Check your state's requirements before you buy, and see the individual product page for the applicable notice.

Do I need a tune after fitting?

Not always. A standard turbo back system will run without a tune on most vehicles, though tuning lets you take full advantage of the extra flow. Some systems — the Navara D40 auto and several DPF delete systems among them — do require tuning after fitment, and this is noted on the product page.

How long does fitting take?

How Do Turbo Back Exhaust Systems Work?

Exhausts are the lungs of your vehicle. 

These systems are responsible for routing exhaust gases away from the engine, improving engine efficiency, and minimising harmful emissions. A well-designed exhaust system can contribute to better power delivery, fuel efficiency, and sound quality.

Basic systems operate as follows:

1. The exhaust gases from the engine first funnelling through restrictive cast iron manifolds (which can be replaced with extractors).

2. The gases then continue their journey through the engine pipe and encounter the catalytic converter, transforming harmful gases into safer emissions.

3. The gases then pass through a resonator, commonly known as a centre muffler.

4. The connecting pipe takes the gases to the rear muffler, which helps to muffle the engine's noise by redirecting and cancelling out sound waves.

5. The final destination for the gases is the tailpipe, where they are expelled from the vehicle.

Turbo back exhaust systems differ from the typical exhaust systems, in many cases acting as a replacement for multiple elements (such as the catalytic converter), with the goal of optimising power.
